Summer Opportunites

Come aside. … and rest for a while’ (Mark 6:31)

For many of us the holiday season is an opportunity to enjoy a break and return feeling refreshed in body and mind. For all of us, it provides an opportunity for the restoring of our soul. 

We start by performing a personal heart scan. This will reveal that after all God has done for us, our hearts have an alarming tendency to depart from Him. One of the proverbs speaks of ‘the backslider in heart’ (Prov.14:14). The symptoms are a gradual inward decline in love, faith and prayer. 

Realising the extent of this we cry out:

‘O that I was as in months past … 

when His lamp shone upon my head and, 

when by His light I walked through darkness’ (Job 29:2-3)

Then we long for the healing of our backsliding heart, the restoring of our soul.

We pray ‘restore to me the joy of Your salvation’ (Psalm 51:12). We call out to our Lord, our Shepherd who alone can restore our soul (Psalm 23:3).

What will be His answer? He will gladly do what he delights to do, pouring in the Holy Spirit who will refresh our heart, renewing our love, our faith and the spiritual vitality of our prayers.
