God keeps His promises – April 2024
God keeps His promises
Over the past few years, British weather hasconsisted of a mixture of long periods of summer sunshine, and of prolonged heavy rain. Sometimes, what had seemed like settled sunny days has been interrupted by sudden and unexpected rain showers, often lasting for several hours.
In such rapidly changing conditions, the sky has frequently been lit up with vivid, beautiful and dramatic rainbows.
Rainbows have been an unchanging feature of the skyscape of our world for thousands of years. We first read of them in the Bible in the ninth chapter of Genesis, which records God’s promise to mankind, after the universal flood He sent to destroy the earth as it was, that He will never flood the earth again. God promised Noah, who had been rescued in the ark: “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
“The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” [Genesis 9:13-16]
In this present world, with its fears of climate change, it is a great assurance to know that the future of our planet does not depend on our human strivings. God knows everything about the changes which are taking place in our climate, and what is causing them. He has everything under His control, and, while we need to be good stewards of our world to the extent that we can, ultimately God will take care of the planet in the way He has planned, and which will fulfil His purposes.
