Truth That Delights God
When it comes to what is true or false, right or wrong, good or evil, the Bible uses two colours – black and white (if they can be called colours). This feature stands out in certain books of the Bible, notably the writings of John, and, also, the book of Proverbs. Many of these profound and wise sayings present us with a stark contrast between what is righteous and what is wicked. One such is Proverbs 11:1.:
‘A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but an accurate weight is His delight’ (NRSV)
The contrast here is emphasised by the words ‘abomination’ and ‘ delight’. The false balance is utterly detestable, whereas the accurate weight is simply delightful.
So here is one way to delight the Lord – be completely honest in filling out that insurance application form or your tax return. Do that, sign it, and God is delighted. Make statements that are in any degree false and God is disgusted.
A friend recently said, as a throw-away comment, ‘our expenses claims are largely a work of fiction’. I smiled. But how would God respond to such a comment – and to my smile?
